Biography

Hermann Max Pechstein was an important German painter and graphic artist of German Expressionism and a member of the artists’ association Brücke.

He mainly created figure paintings, some with exotic motifs from the Palau Islands, as well as still lifes, landscapes from Western Pomerania and the Curonian Spit.

During his several-month stays on the Curonian Spit between 1909 and 1939, he had a decisive influence on the artists’ colony of Nidden. In 1937 the National Socialists branded his works as degenerate art. Many of his works were subsequently removed from the museums, sold or destroyed.

Gift from the artist to Dr. Albrecht (editor of Berlin „Vogue“) Miss Gabriela Albrecht Private Collection, Switzerland

Note

Dr. Albrecht and Pechstein were friends before WWII. The Albrecht family emigrated to the United States and during the war Dr. Albrecht fought for the US forces. Returning to Berlin as a GI, Dr. Albrecht located the Pechsteins and provided them with food. The present drawing was one of the many gifts that the artist gave to Dr. Albrecht as a „thank you“.
