A group show at the gallery | Summerholidays July 27 – August 26 (gallery closed)
The exhibition presents two influential figures of postwar German art – A.R. Penck and Markus Lüpertz – in a radical dialogue with Expressionism. Known for their bold and distinctive visual languages, both artists engage with the legacy of expressionist pioneers such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, August Macke, and Cuno Amiet.
The juxtaposition reveals how Penck and Lüpertz draw on core elements of Expressionism – emotional intensity, subjectivity, and social reflection – and transform them into a new artistic vocabulary. Though their approaches differ, both artists share a deep concern for the human condition and the role of the artist in an ever-changing world.
The exhibition invites you to explore the continuities, ruptures, and transformations within 20th-century German art. It shows how Penck and Lüpertz respond to, reinterpret, and expand upon expressionist traditions, opening fresh perspectives on the relationship between the historical avant-garde and contemporary art.
We look forward to welcoming you to the gallery.
