Biography

Albrecht Schnider is a Swiss painter and draughtsman.

Schnider grew up in Flühli-Sörenberg, a rural community in the Entlebuch district. His childhood is marked by his closeness to nature and the countryside and by the influence of the Catholic Church. After the Matura he studied at the School of Design and the University of Berne. In 1987 he painted his first portraits, which were already shown in an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern in 1988. This was followed by landscape paintings, which were created on his father’s alp in Sörenberg. Already at this time Schnider was exhibited and supported by the Bernese art collector and gallery owner Toni Gerber.

Afterwards Schnider spent three years in Italy. First he lived and worked in Follonica near Grosseto, then until early 1992 at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma in Rome. The last time he spent in Florence, where he discovered the art of Italian mannerism for himself. From 1993 to 1998 Schnider lived in Brussels.

In summer 1998 he moved with his family to Berlin. Since spring 2018 Albrecht Schnider lives and works in a village on Lake Thun in Switzerland.

Since 2005 Schnider has been a lecturer for painting at the Bern University of the Arts.
