Ed Ruscha

Edward “Ed” Joseph Ruscha is a US-American painter, graphic artist, photographer and filmmaker. He is best known for his work in the fields of painting and printmaking.

He attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1956 and had his first solo exhibition in 1963 at Walter Hopps’ Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles.

As early as 1962 he published photo books in editions of 400 to 2000 copies. In the visual language, the American photographer Walker Evans, among others, was a model for Ruscha. There are parallel tendencies in Robert Frank’s work; his successors are Bernd and Hilla Becher.

In 2001 Ruscha was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, in 2004 an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to numerous national and international awards, Ed Ruscha from Germany was awarded the Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography (DGPh) at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne on September 2, 2006. In 2014 Edward Ruscha was elected member (NA) of the National Academy of Design in New York.
